Kathryn A. "Katie" Stauffer, 19, of Old School Road, Haycock Township, died March 8 in Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center, Brunswick, Ga., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in West Rockhill Township, she was a daughter of Carl L. and Linda P. (Bartholomew) Stauffer of West Rockhill Township.

A sophomore at Swarthmore College, Delaware County, she majored in pre-medicine and psychology. She was valedictorian of Quakertown High School Class of 2001 and received the WPVI-TV Channel 6, Philadelphia, Best of the Class 2001 award. A member of the National Honor Society, she received a National Merit Scholar Commendation, Comcast Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship, American Chemical Society certificate, Bausch and Lomb Science Medal, Dr. Belle Neiman-Mease Memorial Award, President's Student Service Award, Quakertown PAGE Scholarship, Society of Women Engineers Certificate, Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Certificate of Merit, and the Lehigh Valley Organ Donor Awareness Award. She also received Quakertown High School Departmental Award in English AP.

She was a swim instructor and lifeguard for the Upper Bucks YMCA, a lifeguard at Quakers Green, and an assistant swim coach for the Quakertown Summer Swim Team. Before that, she worked for the former Fleck's Bakery, Quakertown.


She was on the Swarthmore College Swim Team, where she also taught swimming lessons and was recently appointed head lifeguard. She received the Gold Medal Swarthmore College 200 Free Relay record in the 2002 and 2003 Centennial Conference Championships.

She swam for Quakertown High School where she was the most valuable player and received a bronze medal in the 50 meter Freestyle 2001 District 1 Suburban League Championship.

She swam for the Upper Bucks YMCA where she holds league record for the 50 meter Free Penn Del Girls B-North in 2001. She also swam for the Quakertown Dolphins.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Richlandtown.
